Friend Not Food
Turkey is commonly served for Christmas dinner in the UK. In the United States, it is at the centre of the table in most households during Thanksgiving.
But, turkeys shouldn’t be food. They can be your friend. These are highly social animals. They create strong bonds with their family and they can recognise each other by their voice. Turkeys are also able to recognise your face and will come to greet you!
Turkey Baby Grow
Wild turkeys rest in the treetops. They are unable to fly for the first couple of weeks of their life. During this flightless time their mother will sleep on the floor with them. Baby turkeys are called poults.
The fleshy growth that hangs from their beak is called a snood. Studies have shown that the length of the snood is related to the turkey’s health. Female turkeys (hens) prefer male turkeys (gobblers) with longer snoods. Size does matter for turkeys!
