Father’s Day is celebrated on different dates and in different ways in different parts of the world. The day each country chooses for this holiday depends on each country’s tradition and culture. No matter when or how it is celebrated, it is a day to honour all fathers and parenthood.
When Is Father’s Day?
In the UK this day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, falling on the 17th of June this year. This date was established first in the US and many non-Catholic countries have followed this tradition.
In Spain we celebrate Father’s Day on the 19th of May, as it is St. Joseph’s Day. Many catholic countries in Europe have adopted this date as Joseph was the father of Jesus Christ.
Curiously in Thailand, Father’s Day is set as the birthday of the king. December 5th is the birthday of current king. And Bulgaria celebrates this day on our Boxing Day, the 26th of December.

This coming Sunday many will give their fathers gifts and cards to honour them on their day. Some people prefer to spend this day with some quality children-father time together. Many families will treat their father/father-figure to a family meal.
In Germany, Father’s Day is celebrated differently from the rest of the world. Männertag ( also known as Men’s day) is celebrated by getting drunk with wagons of beer and indulging in regional food. It happens every year on the Thursday forty days after Easter, this year it was celebrated on the 10th of May.
Russians celebrate Defender of the Fatherland Day instead of Father’s Day. It is celebrated on the 23rd of February with parades and processions in honour of veterans, and women give small gifts to the men in their lives.
The rose is the official flower for Father’s Day. Wearing a red rose signifies a living father, while a white one honours a deceased father.
